Are you pulled by the current or exploring unspoilt paths?
This is one of the most important questions you can ask yourself. Are you a passenger being dragged along with the current?
When you look up from your business[1], you’ll probably see everyone else bobbing and weaving on the same current—being dragged along for no better reason than to follow everyone else’s actions. The broken logic behind this is that if they are all doing it, it must be right.
Not everyone thinks that way; one or two of us refuse to be taken by the current, preferring to lead the way and take others along with us, not trap them in an alternate current but inspire, motivate, and encourage a new, unspoilt path[2].
If you take time out and think about it for a moment, you will realise that most others are being dragged along, and just because most do this, it doesn’t make it right. Not if you have designs to be exceptional rather than mediocre[3]. After all, anyone, yes, anyone, can be mediocre!
I am not surprised that this is the prevailing current that the majority follow because, from the moment we are born, we are conditioned to follow the trend. We are encouraged to park our dreams; they are labelled as unrealistic by parents, peers, teachers and employers, or worse still, pack them away in a sealed box and conform to the current, dragging everyone else along.
Education, getting a loan for the car, getting a mortgage, getting a proper job, working all hours, saving for retirement, and finally spending your assets accumulated over the years on care, and then…well, I will leave you to fill that gap with your beliefs. But wait, the space between leaving school and retirement can be different if you dare to step away from the prevailing current.
Looking back, I have punctuated my time with bursts of energy designed to keep me out of the current. Moreover, I have done all I can to encourage, motivate and inspire others to do the same.
My recent history is littered with small businesses that have benefitted in this way, being pulled from the current and set on a new path that has seen results and lifestyles change for the better. While the International Publishing Company, the Engineering Company, the Social Media Company, The Digital Marketing Agency, the Retail Chain, the Financial Services Business, the Recruitment Business and the Offshore Energy Company all benefitted, I knew I could do much better and help even more business owners and leaders.
That is where I am today, at the vanguard of a new (R)Evolution. I am looking to take as many people as possible with me—business people who are serious about personal and business development and generating sustainable and exceptional results.
I call it my (R)Evolution because that is precisely what it is a Revolution in how start-ups, micro, and small business[4]can develop on the back of unlimited advice and support. As we[5] create our revolution, the beautiful result is that all those who come with us experience the Evolution of their business on new paths and never be dragged along in the current mediocre performance.
Next week we will start to share the components of our (R)Evolution with you; we will share the vision and mission. More than that, we will make it enjoyable by throwing in some benefits that you can take full advantage of, no strings, just a way for me to fulfil my promise to create more success for anyone willing to learn, share and, as a result, develop…
[1] I urge everyone to look up from their day-to-day work far more frequently, look around and live more in the moment.
[2] There are those who would have you believe that there are no unspoilt paths to find in business; they could not be more wrong!
[3] Nobody starts out in business to be mediocre, but so many seem to accept that position.
[4] Start-up is a business that has been going for less than five years; micro employs less than eight, and small businesses with more than eight but less than fifty employees.
